Fitness Boxing - An Experience Report

Ingeborg wants to box like Maggie Fitzgerald in Million Dollar Baby. To see what it feels like, she tries fitness boxing at the 24h GYMONE fitness studio in Zürich-Altstetten.

First impressions

I receive a friendly welcome and a short tour of the studio. The black-and-yellow space feels urban, and a mixed group is already gathering in the boxing area.

I can begin at my own pace. That is reassuring—at least until the skipping rope comes out for the warm-up.

Warm-up and technique

The session begins with skipping and simple boxing movements. My rhythm is not perfect yet, but the trainer helps me improve the technique one step at a time.

We practise punches, defence, footwork, and hip rotation. Coordinating everything at once is much harder than it looks from the outside.

During shadowboxing, I keep my rear hand at my chin. Small weights make even simple combinations feel intense surprisingly quickly.

A full-body challenge

My arms and legs grow heavier with every round. Push-ups and crunches between combinations make one thing clear: fitness boxing challenges the whole body.

How it feels afterwards

After the final round, I feel tired but energised. I spend the entire session focused on the movement, without thinking about anything outside the room.

My takeaway

Fitness boxing combines technique, conditioning, and concentration. It challenges me, clears my head, and is much more fun than I expected. I would gladly come back.
